About

The origin of the word cocktail remains a mystery. There are various theories it. One of them states that it is derived from a mixed drink called “coquetel”, served to French officers in southern states of America during the American war of independence. The British claim that the word comes from the dregs drawn form the very bottom of barrels of spirits and known as “cock-tailings”.

Whatever the case may be, there is little doubt that the cocktail reached its peak fame during the 1920s when the Prohibition was in full swing. In order to stay away from the beady-eyes of the police, the owners of the bars and pubs disguised the appearance of alcoholic drinks with additives and the cocktails soared in publicity.
